Inside Out 2 Is Officially the Highest-Grossing Animated Movie of All Time as Pixar Celebrates

Inside Out 2 has officially surpassed Frozen 2 to become the highest-grossing animated movie of all time with global box office earnings of $1.462 billion.

Pixar deservedly celebrated this big milestone on X/Twitter with an adorable piece of art of Inside Out 2's emotions and a message from director Kelsey Mann and producer Mark Nielsen.

"We are absolutely blown away by all the love for Inside Out 2 from around the world," the message reads. "Thank you for joining us on this incredible emotional rollercoaster."

Wat Disney Animation Studios sent its congrats to Inside Out 2 with an adorable crossover image we just had to include here.

"Everyone from Arendelle and Walt Disney Animation Studios is sending warm hugs to all of Pixar on their incredible achievement as Inside Out 2 becomes animation’s biggest movie ever," Walt Disney Animation Studios wrote on X/Twitter.

Alongside becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, Inside Out 2 is also the 13th highest-grossing film in global box office history. It currently sits behind Top Gun: Maverick's $1.495 billion, Furious 7's $1.515 billion, The Avengers' $1.520 billion, and more.

Inside Out 2 has a few more accolades to celebrate as well, including being the fastest animated film to $1 billion globally (19 days), the highest-grossing movie of 2024 and the only one to cross $1 billion, the biggest global animation opening of all time ($292 million) and second-biggest domestic animation opening ($154 million), and the highest-grossing film in industry history in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Uruguay.

The film isn't done either, as it is set to open in its final market, Japan, next week.

This is a big win for Pixar after a rough few years that began with the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused Disney and Pixar to release Onward digitally just two weeks after it was released in theaters. Pixar's next three films – Soul, Luca, and Turning Red – all were released exclusively on Disney+, and, while Lightyear marked the return of Pixar films in theaters, it only earned $226 million globally as the pandemic was still a factor.

Elemental was a turning point for the studio as it recovered from a slower start and brought in nearly $500 million globally and was the biggest original animated movie since Coco in 2017.

In our Inside Out 2 review, we said, "While its chaotic new cast serves a clear purpose, Inside Out 2 is more metaphor than meaning. It explains plenty about the confusing emotions associated with puberty, often in intelligent ways, but it rarely lets them be felt or experienced, the way its predecessor did. It also fails to live up to Pixar's own high watermarks for emotionally driven tales of adolescence – movies like Luca and Turning Red – so it feels like a step down in several regards."

Following Inside Out 2, Pixar is hard at work on Elio for 2025 and Toy Story 5 for 2026. Pixar President Jim Morris also said the studio plans to make three movies every two years and put a bigger focus on existing franchises like The Incredibles and Finding Nemo going forward.

Additionally, fans can look forward to catching a first glimpse of the rumored Inside Out Disney+ show at D23 in early August.
