It Sounds Like Anthony Mackie Just Let Slip a Major Captain America: Brave New World Spoiler

Following in the footsteps of Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland, fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe star Anthony Mackie might have let slip a major story spoiler for an upcoming movie: Captain America: Brave New World.

Warning! Potential spoilers for Captain America: Brave New World follow.

In a joint cast interview with Entertainment Weekly, Captain America actor Anthony Mackie was asked how significant the events of 2008's The Incredible Hulk are to Captain America: Brave New World, given a number of characters from that movie turn up in this new movie. Responding, Mackie might have suggested Hulk "shows up" in Captain America: Brave New World.

Here’s the exact quote, punctuated by what sounds like knowing interjections from Harrison Ford, who plays Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross / Red Hulk:

Mackie: “The events of Hulk and his film don’t pertain to this movie at all.”

Ford: “Aw, come on, man!”

Mackie: “When he shows up… Not Red Hulk! The other Hulk! There are multiple Hulks! So, when he shows up…"

Ford: "There are?"

Mackie: "Yeah. But there’s only one Red Hulk.”

Ford: “Good.”

Mackie: “There’s only one.”

Ford: “Okay, man. Good.”

Mackie: “That’s it. Solid. There will never be another Red Hulk.”

Ford: “I’m happy! Okay go on, I'm sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

Mackie: “When he shows up, his world, his universe, his story, is completely separate from what… the way we utilize him in our story.”

Does that sound like Anthony Mackie just revealed that The Hulk will appear in Captain America: Brave New World? Some fans seem to think so. And really, it would make a lot of sense. As we’ve seen from the Captain America: Brave New World trailer, Red Hulk faces off against Sam Wilson as Captain America, and on paper, that doesn’t sound like a fight Wilson will have much of a chance of winning, given he doesn’t have any powers to speak of (unless, of course, he becomes powered up during the course of the movie.)

Fans have speculated that Captain America may need a hand taking on Red Hulk, and that hand may turn out to be big and green. The suggestion is Bruce Banner’s The Hulk makes a dramatic entrance and gives Red Hulk the beatdown he deserves.

This is all speculation, despite Mackie’s confusing comments. Marvel and its head honcho Kevin Feige have yet to confirm The Hulk’s appearance in Captain America: Brave New World. Perhaps people are reading too much into Anthony Mackie's comments here. Perhaps Anthony Mackie misspoke. Perhaps he didn’t! If not, I imagine he might wake up to a few angry phone calls.

While we wait to find out, check out how Captain America’s Comic-Con footage confirmed the origin of the MCU’s Adamantium, as well as the identity of Giancarlo Esposito’s character.
