Inside Out 2 Surpasses The Super Mario Bros. Movie as Second-Highest Grossing Animated Film

Inside Out 2 has overtaken The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the second-highest-grossing animated film at the box office.

Disney and Pixar must be jumping for Joy, as Inside Out 2 has just smashed another box office milestone. As reported by Collider and backed up by Box Office Mojo, the animated sequel has earned $578.3 million in North America and $1.37 billion worldwide, which puts it ahead of The Super Mario Bros. Movie on both counts.

By comparison, The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $574.9 million in the U.S. and Canada during its run in theaters last year and $787.1 million in other territories for a global total of $1.36 billion, meaning Inside Out 2 has now jumped ahead of it and is edging closer to becoming the highest-grossing animated movie of all time.

Inside Out 2 quickly became the highest-grossing film of 2024 and crossed $1 billion at the global box office in record time. The movie also passed Incredibles 2 to become Pixar's top-grossing movie ever and now only sits behind Frozen 2's $1.45 billion on the list of the top-grossing animated films at the worldwide box office.

The Inside Out sequel takes audiences further inside the mind of Riley, now a teenager conjuring an entirely new range of emotions. IGN had the opportunity to tour Pixar Animation Studios and catch up with director Kelsey Mann to take a closer look at the new characters, plus the designs that didn't make the final cut.

Audiences have hardly been able to contain their emotions over Inside Out 2. The movie is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its visuals, cast, and clever storytelling. IGN's review of Inside Out 2 called it "a smart but emotionally stunted sequel" with "a few inventive ideas that make for hearty amusement."
