Masters of the Universe: Mondo's Scare Mare Is the Coolest He-Man Figure Yet

If you have a soft spot for Mattel's classic Masters of the Universe figures, you've probably found yourself admiring Mondo's action figure line. Mondo's figures translate the classic designs into highly detailed 1:6 scale collectibles. And their latest release is easily the most impressive yet.

For the first time, Mondo is debuting a brand new character in the Master of the Universe mythos. Dubbed Scare Mare, this spectral horse serves as the faithful steed of He-Man's ghostly nemesis Scare Glow. Check out the slideshow gallery below for an exclusive early look at this new figure and his truly epic wingspan.

The Scare Mare figure was originally conceived by Mondo Senior Directors Hector Arce and Bob Fulkerson and designed by Arce and MOTU historian Florian Bertmer. The finished piece was sculpted by Tommy Hodges and painted by Mark Bristow.

Scare Mare features mixed media elements like removable armor and cloth components. The wings, tail and mane all glow in the dark. The figure has a massive 54-inch wingspan, though it also comes with swappable spectral energy pieces for the more space-conscious collectors out there.

"Scare Glow as a character has always had a certain mystique around it," Arce tells IGN. "Originally one of the most sought-after and rare figures from the original MOTU toy line from the '80s, to now just being beloved as being an all-around badass looking character and fan favorite. At Mondo, both our previous 1:6 scale Scare Glow figures were instant sell-outs and are really sought after to this day. We felt that a character with this type of popularity and gravitas deserved a powerful companion to aid him in his evil-doing ways. Thus, after a lot of brainstorming, Scare-Mare was born!"

Arce continues, "What do you do to out-statement a 1:6 scale Battle-Cat and Panthor? Well, how about a giant death horse with an over 54-inch wingspan! Joking aside, we hope that Scare-Mare does in fact become that statement piece for our Mondo MOTU fans and collectors. The attention to detail and care we've put into the creation of this character will hopefully really show in the final product and we hope everyone falls in love with it as much as we have."

Part of the fun of Scare Mare is that this character has been designed in cooperation with Mattel and is being inducted into the larger Masters of the Universe franchise. Mondo developed an entire backstory for Scare Mare, which will be explored in a mini-comic included with the figure.

"Creating a brand-new character for the MOTU lore is no easy task, but we have an incredible team here at Mondo and also worked with the amazing Florian Bertmer (a MOTU superfan in his own right) to bring Scare-Mare to life," Arce says. "That said, yes, you can expect to see Scare-Mare in other media for sure!"

As for Scare Glow, while Mondo has already released figures of the villain in the past, they'll be going all-out with the new Scare Glow Deluxe figure that's being offered alongside Scare Mare. Fans can expect a more detailed and fully realized take on Scare Glow than ever before.

"For us this is the end all, be all of Scare Glows," Arce says. "We've done a handful of takes on the character with the previous two being more directly inspired by his original look from the 80's. This new one is truly a deluxe release as it includes many of the accessories and features we didn't get the chance to do previously. A first for Scare Glow collectibles is actual sculpted bones, in all other versions the bones are usually a decal placed on the body, we have gone a step further and sculpted all the bones on his body and yes, they will fully glow. We've also included accessories that showcase his human form Karak Null, as well as a fun zombie-fied version of Karak Null's head that we have designed here at Mondo. This new Scare Glow truly feels like it lives up to the style that we've developed in our MOTU line over the past few years. Without bias, it's my favorite figure we've ever done!"

Both Scare Mare and Scare Glow Deluxe will be available for preorder soon on the official Mondo website.

In other He-Man news, the live-action Masters of the Universe reboot finally has a release date – June 5, 2026. Directed by Bumblebee's Travis Knight, the film will star Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man.
